ABOUT THE RECORD
Toulouse Street was the album by which most of their fans began discovering the Doobie Brothers, and it has retained a lot of its freshness over the decades. Producer Ted Templeman was attuned to the slightly heavier and more Southern style the band wanted to work toward on this, their second album, and the results were not only profitable including a platinum record award but artistically impeccable. The Doobies threw jazz and R&B into the mix, as well as country, folk, and bluegrass elements. It was their first with new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack to augment existing drummer John Hartman, so it meant that they now had their trademark twin-drummer sound. Toulouse Street is the name of a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The cover and inside centerfold photos were taken at a brothel on Toulouse Street. Listen to the Music (#11) and Jesus is Just Alright (#35) were both hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself peaked at #21 in the US.
